Invisalign Bay Area Women's Classic at Chase Center Features Four 2024 NCAA Tournament Teams, Including Three Two-Seeds

Monday, November 18, 2024

The 2024 NCAA Women's basketball tournament set record-breaking viewership with marquee stars, compelling matchups and entertaining competition. Chase Center will host four teams that participated in that tournament, including three second seeds — Stanford, Ohio State and UCLA — on Dec. 20 for the first-ever Invisalign Bay Area Women’s Classic. Stanford and Ohio State are the opening matchup at 5:30 p.m. (PST), followed by a tournament rematch between UCLA and Creighton at 8 p.m.

The Stanford Cardinal have one of the most prestigious women's basketball programs, tied for the third-most titles in NCAA Women's history (3), with their most recent championship coming in 2021. The Cardinal went 30-6 last season, capturing the second seed in their region before a Sweet 16 loss to NC State. Stanford has had 31 players drafted into the WNBA, with Cameron Brink being the most recent selection as the second overall pick of the 2024 Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks.

After finishing 26-6 en route to a Big Ten championship, the Ohio State Buckeyes were the second seed in their region last season before losing to Duke in the Round of 32. Their leader in points and assists last season, Jacy Sheldon, was drafted by the Dallas Wings with the fifth pick of the 2024 WNBA Draft. With Sheldon leaving for the WNBA, Ohio State turns to its second-leading scorer from last season, forward Cotie McMahon, Oregon transfer guard Chance Gray and guard Jaloni Cambridge, ESPN's second-ranked prospect from the Class of 2024.

The second-seed UCLA Bruins (27-7) and the seventh-seed Creighton Blue Jays (26-6) met in the second round of the 2024 Tournament, with the Bruins winning a tightly contested matchup 67-63. Bruins Guard Kiki Rice led all scorers with 24 points, while Creighton guard Lauren Jensen scored 20 points, pacing the Blue Jays. Both guards are back with their respective schools ahead of the rematch. The Bruins also added transfer forward Janiah Barker from Texas A&M, a player ESPN has projected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming 2025 WNBA Draft. Creighton retained four of their five starters from last season, including their leading scorer (Lauren Jensen; 17.3 PPG), rebounder (Morgan Maly; 6.5 RPG) and passer (Molly Mogensen; 4.3 APG).

It's an exciting time for women's basketball, particularly in the Bay Area, with the Invisalign Bay Area Women's Classic coming to Chase Center on Dec. 20. By then, the Bay's new WNBA team, the Golden State Valkyries, will have added players in the expansion draft ahead of their Chase Center debut in 2025. Fans who attend the Bay Area Women's Classic will see some of the college game's best talent and gain more insight into the next generation of the sport.
