This game follows the USF Legacy Doubleheader at Chase Center on Wednesday, Dec. 21, featuring the USF women’s team taking on Sacramento State, followed by the men’s team hosting Loyola Chicago.
Following its third postseason appearance in four years, the University of San Francisco (USF) men's basketball team returns seven student-athletes from last year, including All-West Coast Conference (WCC) guard Tyrone Riley IV and Ryan Beasley. Entering his fourth year as head coach of the Dons, Chris Gerlufsen is hungry to guide the programs to new heights after earning a No. 1 seed in the National Invitation Tournament last season. USF has earned back-to-back top-three finishes in the WCC, marking the first time in 22 years (2001-02 and 2002-03) the team has accomplished that feat.
Regarded as one of the perennial powerhouses in collegiate basketball, Gonzaga has appeared in 26 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including nine of the last 10 Sweet 16s. Gonzaga is the only program to win its opening-round NCAA Tournament game each of the last 16 tournaments. Last season, the Bulldogs won 26 games before falling to national runner-up Houston in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Zags extended their NCAA record with their 19th season of 25 or more wins. Gonzaga has also won a share of the West Coast Conference crown in 11 of the past 13 seasons. This year, Gonzaga returns one of the nation’s top frontcourts in All-American Graham Ike and junior Braden Huff. Head Coach Mark Few enters his 27th season at the helm of the Bulldogs with the top winning percentage among active coaches in the country at 83 percent.
